Carla Smith

Mrs. Smith is a graduate of Hernando High, Mississippi State University, and Blue Mountain College. She is a Special Education teacher here at HHES and has been teaching for 22 years. She started her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher at HES in 1994 and transitioned to HHES where she has taught 2nd and 3rd grade for several years before moving to special education.

Mrs. Smith’s classroom philosophy is that all children can thrive in an environment conducive to learning. She defines a proper environment as one that is safe, organized, has clear expectations, and strives to help students find joy in learning.

Carla Smith has been married 22 yrs. to her husband, Mark Smith, who is also a teacher for Desoto County Schools. They have three beautiful children, Dalton, 20; Dylan 18;  and Weslie Faith, 16. Hernando is her hometown, and she is proud to give back to the community that has given so much to her.

Many of Mrs. Smith’s colleagues describe her as someone:

  • “Who is willing to help others”.
  • “She is a devoted teacher to her students, like a mother is for her own personal children”.
  • “Patience is the most valuable asset a teacher must exhibit in her career.
  • Mrs. Smith is an excellent example of this day in and day out with her students, colleagues, parents, and within her local community”.
  • “Carla Smith is loved by parents, staff and students. They know she has their best interest at heart.”
  • "She doesn't just make a difference - she IS the difference."
