FILTER BY SUBJECT:
homework
Due Date: 4/7/2017
Subject: 3rd Grade

**From now until the end of the year, homework will be individualized for each student based on their specific needs. I will continue to send home the homework folder and newsletter on Friday, but specific written assignments will be given in ELA or Math packets. Some students may not have packets to complete. Please don’t stop working at home!

ALL students are still responsible for studying their spelling words, studying multiplication/division, reviewing vocab., and reading every week.

IXL skills– FF.1-FF.13

skills
Due Date: 4/7/2017
Subject: 3rd Grade

Math: Students will continue memorizing simple multiplication and division facts. Students will review all skills learned this 9 weeks. We will be reviewing multi-step word problems with all operations.

Multiplication test will begin to get more difficult. Most 0s, 1,s , and 10s will be gone from the test. There will be 25 basic division problems added!!

ELA

In this unit, the students will explore important ideas in expository nonfiction, fiction, and drama. They will identify the ideas they feel are most important to understand and remember in texts and support their opinions with evidence from the text. Determining important ideas is a powerful strategy for helping readers understand and remember what they read. Socially, the students will develop the skills of giving reasons for their thinking and showing respect for the thinking of others, even when it is different from their own.

While reading at home with your child, consider stopping to discuss questions such as:

••What is something you learned from the part we just read?

••What do you think is most important to understand and remember in the part we just read? Why do you think that?

After reading, you can help your child think more deeply about a book by asking questions such as:

••What is something important you remember from the reading?

••What do you think people can learn from this story?

You can support what your child has been learning at school by reading nonfiction at home together. Discussing what you are learning and wondering as you read together will deepen your child’s understanding of the reading. You might help your child think about what he or she is wondering by asking questions before, during, and after the reading, such as:

••What do you wonder about this topic?

••What is one thing you learned that surprised you?

••What are you still wondering?

Talking about the books and articles you read together can help your child learn from and enjoy nonfiction. I hope you and your child continue to enjoy reading and learning together.

ELA (English Language Arts)

Wondering, or questioning, is a comprehension strategy that helps readers. Asking questions also helps readers remember what they read. The goal is for the students to use wondering/questioning regularly on their own to better understand texts. Before reading aloud to your child, look at the cover of the book together, read the title, and talk about what your child is wondering about the story. As you read, stop every so often to ask and discuss questions such as:

••What questions do you have, or what are you wondering, at this point in

the story?

••What did you picture in your mind as you listened to this part of the story?

••What words helped you create that picture in your mind?

••What do you think might happen next? Why do you think that?

After reading, you can help your child think about the story more deeply by talking about it together.

Third grade will be sculpting soap this nine weks.  We are asking parents if you could please provide your child with either an Ivory soap bar (3oz.) or Palmolive bar (3.2oz.).  You can get this at Dollar Tree 3 for $1.00 (.33 each).  In order for the project to be most effective these square bars work the best.  If you'd like to send more than one bar it would be greatly appreciated.  Please send by Sept. 1st.
